Since we reported to
you last December, a
lot has happened at IC
New York. On
February 6, IC presi-
dent Dr. Arthur Charles
and VP for Alumni &
Development Kathy
Brahimi went to
Boston to visit with
alumni for an evening
of stories, reminiscing,
and elegant dining at MIT’s Endicott House. The dinner was
generously sponsored by former Elementary School Director
Frank Reed and his wife, former IC teacher Fifi Reed. The
activities were organized by the IC New York office with
tremendous support from Boston-based alums
Ramzi
Nuwayhid ’90
, and wife Dalia,
Dr. Amin Sabra ’69
and
Dr.
Ghaleb Daouk ’74.
Guests included prominent members of
the IC Boston medical and business communities and some
former IC Teaching Fellows.
Then, on February 12, alumnus and pianist extraordinaire
Waleed Howrani ’67,
treated a full house of alumni and
friends to a magnificent 60-minute concert at Cami Hall in
New York City, performing pieces by Beethoven, Isaac
Albeniz, Manuel de Falla, and George Gershwin. Our
thanks go out to Drs. Rola and
Rashid Baddoura ’66,
IC
Board member
Wael Bayazid ’80
, and Inter-World Shipping
for their sponsorship of the event. The reception following
the event was hosted by IC’s president, Dr. Charles, and the
IC Board of Trustees. Waleed, who established himself as a
significant talent early on by winning various international
piano competitions, studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory
in Moscow under the tutelage of Oleg Ivanov and Emil
Gilels. The audience responded to his wonderful perform-
ance with a standing ovation. It was an evening that will
remain in our memories
for a long time to come.
The biggest IC event of
the year in North
America in terms of size
and scope happened,
again, right here in New
York City, where after
many months of organi-
zation and anticipation,
the 40-year celebration of the IC Teaching Fellows program
took place. The first of the two activities, a luncheon at the
Princeton Club, attracted well over 90 people, including 40
former Teaching Fellows and more than a dozen of their
teachers and their spouses, who came from all over the
country and from as far away as California, Oregon, and
Canada. The keynote address was provided by Ambassador
Richard Murphy, former ambassador to Syria and the
Philippines and Senior Fellow for the Middle East at the
Council on Foreign Relations, as well as Tom Schuller, IC
President Emeritus 1960-76, followed by a touching video
salutation from Tom Weaver, IC teacher from 1963-85.
Among the guests were Samia and James Sullivan, who
taught at IC for over four decades, Bill Blakemore, foreign
correspondent for ABCNEWS, and various members of the
IC Board of Trustees, including Chairman William Turner.
The evening's activities were organized by Teaching Fellows
Nick Kourides and Rick
Betts, who took the partici-
pants straight back to 1960s
Beirut through video footage
of their various dramatic
productions and football
competitions. After a meal
of traditional Lebanese food
and amusing and poignant
testimonials from some of
the Fellows and their teach-
ers, the microphone
remained open, and many
took the opportunity to share their defining Beirut experi-
ences, some amusing and some poignant, with colleagues
most had not seen in over forty years. Thank you all for the
priceless expressions of great and long-overdue affection
that helped to make this day so memorable and so very spe-
cial.
So, as we wrap up the school year, please accept our best
wishes from New York and know that we are profoundly
grateful for the support extended by our many generous and
talented alumni and friends. On behalf of my colleagues in
New York, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you
all a happy, restful summer.
