“IT WAS AT IC THAT I GOT MY FIRST NOTION ABOUT VOLUNTEERING”
-DIMA KHOURI’95
Shortly after completing my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture in 2000, I was introduced to an educational nonprofit organ-
ization: Junior Achievement (JA). Its mission is to “educate and inspire youth about free market economics and business in
order to improve the quality of their lives.” This is achieved by linking the private sector with the educational sector, by intro-
ducing business professionals as volunteer consultants to classes and helping them transmit their experiences. So I decid-
ed to volunteer, and I gave a two-month session entitled “Personal Economics” to a class of 10th graders.
Today, I am the Program Manager at JA Lebanon. I think that what gave me the enthusiasm to join such an idealistic organ-
ization is the background I got from IC. Even in 1993-94, when I was a member in the Social Service Club, I was taught to
think about “giving back” (volunteering). I am not alone in this. Until now, over 200 managers, CEOs and business profes-
sionals have joined me in volunteering with JA Lebanon, and over 100 companies have sponsored us.
I am not surprised that more than 35% of the volunteers are IC Alumni. To name just a few: Mohammad Hajj ‘94 (Founding
Member),
Alia Nahhal
‘99 (Executive Board Member),
Dr. Talal Jaber
’93 (Founding and Advisory Board Member),
Youssef
Haidar
‘95 (Executive Board Member),
Layal Saad
‘99 (Executive Board Member),
Zeina Zein el Abideen
‘96,
Dima
Ramadan
‘00,
Zina Sanioura
‘97,
Dina Sidani
, ‘00 (volunteers)…
There is a common spirit in all of us, a desire to volunteer that pushes us forward. We owe this spirit to IC.
I now believe that inspiring others is not just being able to help them define their personal dream: it is giving them the
means to pursue it. I’d like to invite all IC alumni to visit us at the office to share this unique experience with us.
Thank you, IC.
