“What could be more exhilarating than
running into IC alumni wherever we go
around the globe!” said Senior Vice
President Mishka Moujabber Mourani
upon her return from Washington, D.C.
where she was invited to present a paper
at a conference held at Johns Hopkins
University’s School of Advanced
International Studies. “I was thrilled when
Rosie Bsheer
’97 came up to me after
my presentation and told me how proud
she was to hear her school was so active-
ly involved in community service and out-
reach programs.” Rosie is working with
Forefront, a global network of human
rights defenders. Mrs. Mourani also
caught up with some other alumni in
Washington, including
Aida Haddad
’71,
who is with the World Bank and
Wissam
Yafi
’87, founding partner of the MENA group, an Arab-
American consulting firm in Washington.
The conference Mrs. Mourani attended on October 8-9,
2003 was entitled CLASH OR CONSENSUS: GENDER AND
HUMAN SECURITY IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD. Women
leaders and human security experts from 20 countries around
the world met in the USA for the conference. International lead-
ers discussed how to improve people’s lives in an atmosphere
of rising extremism, violent conflict and poverty. Among the top-
ics discussed were human rights, preventing the spread of
extremism, and democratic governance. SVP Mourani was
invited to speak about training women and men to become
leaders in their communities. In the course of her presentation,
she mentioned IC’s program of professional development work-
shops for public and private sector teachers and the workshops
she has run to develop instructional leaders.
Other speakers included keynote speaker H.E. Mary
Robinson (Ireland), Executive Director of the Ethical
Globalization Initiative, and formerly President of the Republic
of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; H.E.
Attiya Inayatullah (Pakistan) MP and former Minister; H.E.
Najma Heptullah (India), deputy chairperson of the Upper
House of Parliament; Marianne Wright Edelman (USA),
founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund; and,
Mahnaz Afkhami (Iran/USA), former Minister and founder/CEO
of the Women’s Learning Partnership.
“Leadership for today’s world is inclusive, participatory and
horizontal. We need to empower people by showing them
that, through dialogue and by being life-long learners, they can
make a difference ,” said Mrs. Mourani.
