Karim Hajjali ‘85
Karim shares with his classmates
and all IC graduates these
excerpts of some of the fond
memories at IC: “The answers
we gave to the test we stole from
the administration’s office were
not correct. The test was
replaced. Lesson well-learned
Farid, you hear that?”
“We owe having a ‘vision’ to the late Istanbuli (math
teacher).”
“If you wanna be a “jokar” go “join” a “circas” - Shuayto
(math teacher) “First experience with the probability the-
ory at IC dance parties:
“Would you like to dance? No, would you like to dance?
No, would you like to dance?
No.... No.... No .......... Yes.”
“Very late confession: Yes Margaret, most of us had a
crush on you. You still blush?”
“The amazing ‘Parabola’ illustrations by Nadi Nader.” “I
confirmed Darwin’s theory when I climbed the wall from
I.C. to the AUB dorms in less than five seconds.”
“To my kids “Lea” (4) and “Adel” (7), I can’t help having
the urge of always comparing the school you’re at with
the beautiful one I had.
Hope you get a taste of it at least for a summer camp
when we’re in Beirut.” Most affectionate statement:
“Your father loves you Karim, do well” - ATEF KARAM.
And last but not least, sorry for all that “Grafitti” at
“Nazlet Mehio.”
My IC Story
Some thoughts about IC by
Said Abu Izzeddin ‘64
“Forty two years ago, I was among a group of education
seekers who graduated from
IC with the class of 64. In
those days, graduation cere-
monies were limited to the
class members, family, the
odd girlfriend and dinner out.
It was less colorful than
today’s graduations, but sym-
bolized the same aspirations
and feelings.
In the summer of 1964, we all
lined up to get our High
School diplomas at the AUB
Greenfield. Mr. Thomas
Schuller led the entourage of
truly great educators wearing colorful caps and gowns, and
Mr. Shafic Jeha was the master of ceremonies for that
eventful evening.
Like today, the lineup was in alphabetical order, and
because my family name is Abu-Izzeddin, I was one of the
first graduates to receive my diploma. Just behind me was
Misbah Alamuddin, and a couple of heads down the line
were Moufid Beydoun and many others. My parents, my
uncle and even my grandmother were seated in the special
section allocated for parents and family. They were about
to witness a great transformation!
As the classmate before me proceeded to climb up the
platform after his name was announced to receive his
diploma (which was my cue to start walking toward the
platform), the electricity was cut off at A.U.B and Mr.
Jeha’s microphone fell silent as I received my diploma..!!
Believe me we had no back-up UPS systems then, or
nobody thought about having one, and I graduated UNAN-
NOUNCED.
I cannot describe the expressions on the faces of my par-
ents, who considered that evening the greatest event since
the discovery of Penicillin.
For those who attended my graduation and are still around,
I did graduate from a great place called IC in 1964.
Marwan Arakji ‘85:
“Campus Water Balloon Fight”
It was the spring of ‘85, my last
year before graduation (Math.
Elem. French Section), and in an
effort to mimic a long-standing
annual tradition at AUB, namely
the “Campus Water Balloon
Fight,” pitting students in Arts &
Sciences against those in
Engineering, we decided to hold
our own year-end version of the
competition – the French Section
versus English Section “Campus
Water Balloon Fight.” Besides the tremendous fun we had
– including pushing the English Section off campus, all
the way to Mehio’s kiosk – the day was a memorable in
the sense that students were able to unite, identify a com-
mon goal, plan, coordinate and execute. In fact, similar
activities have become a part of today’s corporate world, in
an effort to develop employees’ managerial skills, corporate
culture and interpersonal relationships. Unless I am mistak-
en, this event never took place again at IC. It is unfortunate,
because many of us still fondly recall that day and the fun
we had, not to mention that it was a memorable way to bid
farewell to 10 years at IC.
