Campus News
In order to help students develop creative and leadership
skills, IC strongly supports its arts programs, musical activi-
ties, and athletic teams. Today’s IC students all study art and
music, and some even enroll in after school activities and
courses offered during holiday periods. This year, in the
music program alone, more then 400 students (Ain Aar
campus included), are registered.
“The IC Music Department, individually and as a unit,
deserves special commendation this season for the many
excellent and varied shows that were put on throughout the
school, from the preschool to the secondary school,”
declares Mrs. Mourani. The Music Department’s efforts have
been far-ranging this year; from Casino Du Liban concerts,
to choir members travelling to England and The
Netherlands, our students’ voices continue to resonate. Here
is a brief summary of this year’s most remarkable musical
events:
Carols by
Candlelight at
the Casino Du
Liban:
The Ras
Beirut Secondary
and Elementary
School Choirs,
and Ain Aar
Elementary
School Choir,
were invited to sing alongside the National Opera of
Lebanon in a Christmas concert entitled Carols by
Candlelight on December 22, 2003.
Senior Choir Members travel to The Netherlands:
Yasmina
Chami and Yasmina Sabbah auditioned by CD and were
selected to represent IC at the Association of Music in
International Schools (AMIS) Senior Choir in The Hague,
capital of The Netherlands. The AMIS Choir includes 450
students from 25 other international schools.
Middle School Choir Members travel to England
:
Six IC
Middle School students were selected to participate in the
Honors Choir that took place in London. Randa Sabbah and
Arlette Akl chaper-
oned the students.
Viva La Musica:
In
March, IC families
and friends enjoyed a
spring concert held
by students on cam-
pus. The evening featured solo performances, along with
those of the Junior and Senior Choirs, a debut of the first
ever Boys’ Choir, and an appearance by the Dance Group
in the performance La Grande Cascade.
Composers’ Night:
This was the first concert dedicated to
students’ original compositions in music. The concert fea-
tured sixteen students’ work in both instrumentals and
vocals.
ClassYcal Concerts
:
Middle School and Secondary School
students performed a classical concert on April 29. The pro-
grams were varied, ranging from Brahms’ Hungarian Dance
No.5 through Tchaikovsky, Bach, Chopin, and Clementi, to
W.C Handy’s St. Louis Blues, as well as Stairway to Heaven
by Led Zeppelin and Yardbird Suite by Charlie Parker.
Singers and Swingers in Music Halls
:
A group of very talent-
ed soloists and choristers sang songs from important
Broadway and French musicals. Each song was accompa-
nied by a dance. The Dance Group presented a magnificent
tableau of oriental dance as well as a creative dance called
Who, repre-
senting the
search for
self and iden-
tity and
boasting a
style that
blends classi-
cal ballet
with rap.
