Recently, International College athletes participated in two
very well-known events, once again coming away with top
honors in both. In the Alton Reynolds Football Invitational
Tournament, the Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys both won
their divisional titles with outstanding play. Added to this,
the IC Track and Field Teams were honored to be invited to
the prestigious
Screaming Eagles
Track and Field
Invitational
Tournament held in
Cairo, Egypt, where
they surpassed all
expectations by
placing in medal
round finals in nineteen events, and earning seven medals
as well as a divisional honor in the Junior Varsity Girls com-
petition. In all, both events proved to everyone that the
International College is ready to take on the sporting scene
with some of the finest school athletes in all of Lebanon,
and beyond.
As for the year in its entirety, the International College ath-
letic teams have managed to take another step into history
by participating in over sixty events this year, both locally
and internationally. In all, they have produced enough
medals, trophies, and banners to fill a display case. Besides
taking top honors in six Alton Reynolds placings, IC teams
have also taken away nine top honors and one divisional
honor in international tournaments. To this should be
added the multiple top honors they have been awarded in
local tournaments and league play. In all, International
College is well on its way to becoming a respected leader in
sports, in both local and international venues.
This is exactly what
Dan Summers, our
IC Athletic
Coordinator and
Head ofPhysical
Education, had in
mind when he first
arrived at the begin-
ning of the school
year. Recognizing the outstanding coaching ability and tal-
ented athletes at IC, Dan noted that he “would like to see a
greater athletic opportunity for our Elementary, Middle and
High School students, adding, “Another area that I would
like to build upon is our athletic diversity; I think it is very
important that IC be known for more than one or two
sports.” Finally, as his third goal, Dan wants to see more IC
students involved in athletics. As for meeting these three
goals, there remains little doubt that all three are well on
their way to being accomplished, which is an important
achievement on the part of IC, since, “Many people who
reminisce about their past
school years inevitably
relate the positive experi-
ences [of] school trips, ath-
letic, and academic partici-
pation. This, of course, has a
great reflection on the
school. As I see it, the more
we allow our students to
prove their talents in their
entirety, the greater opportu-
nity that they have in becoming well-rounded citizens.”
As the IC Elementary School and Preschool continue to work
towards their main united goal of developing students who portray
the PYP profile, the administration
and staff recognize the impor-
tance of communication in devel-
oping successful inquiring stu-
dents. The two campuses decided
to highlight and promote their
young authors as risk-takers. In
conjunction with the celebration
of National Reading Week and to
promote early literacy, Ras Beirut Preschool held the first 'Young
Authors' Day' celebration. First Grade and CP from Ras Beirut
Elementary students were invited by the KGII and GS students to
join the celebration of themselves as young authors.
The students were given the opportunity to read a published piece
of their writing to a group of students. The event was held over
two days, April 21st for the English sections and April 22nd for the
French sections. In preparation for the event, the students utilized
the school libraries to learn more about their favorite authors and
illustrators. Some favorites were Robert Munsch, Eric Carle and
Leo Lionne. As the big day approached, students completed their
stories and practiced presenting them to their peers; reflection and
editing was an ongoing expectation before the final day.
With stories written in English, French or Arabic, the 160 students
paraded into the upper playground to celebrate their successes as
readers and writers. Although this was an unfamiliar situation, the
students have become confident communicators.
The upper playground was buzzing with excitement as the young
authors arrived and were arranged in their groups. As the event
progressed, students shared their pieces in small groups. Students
were encouraged by their group leader to discuss and question
each other about their writing. Smiles were seen by all as the stu-
dents took turns presenting stories. Administrators, teachers and
many parents all worked hand in hand to make this event a flour-
ishing promotion of early literacy.
Mrs. Randa Khoury reflects on the event, "This is PYP in action.
Through communication the students used thinking skills to reflect
on their experiences as writers. We hope to continue to develop a
school which enriches the learning and lives of the students." A
special thank you goes out to the school administration and other
participants for giving the students a wonderful learning
experience.
