In Memory Of
On January 13, 2004, Dr. Albert Nader passed away in
Montreal at the age of 93. Dr. Nader taught at the International
College from 1957 until 1977 in both the French and English
sections. He taught courses on
Islamic Philosophy and the
History of Sciences among the
Arabs for the classes of
Philosophy, Experimental
Sciences and Elementary
Mathematics. His courses were
taught using books he himself
had authored.
Dr. Nader, an internationally
renowned specialist on Islamic
Philosophy, received a Doctorat
d’Etat ès Lettres from the
Sorbonne in 1949. He was a
professor at the University of
Baghdad between 1949 and 1954, before being appointed pro-
fessor at the Lebanese University in Beirut in1954. He also
taught at the AUB, the Arab Univeristy of Beirut and the Institut
des Lettres Orientales (Saint Joseph’s University).
Dr. Nader joined his sons in Montreal, Canada, in 1987, where
he kept active and presented several conferences at McGill
University and the Université de Montréal. His last book,
Courants d’idées en Islam, was published in November 2003.
He also had two more books ready for editing, L’Islam et le
Fondement du Pouvoir and La Modération dans la Croyance.
Dr. Nader is survived by his wife Micheline, his sons Joseph (IC
1966), Pierre (IC 1972), and Elie, as well as four grandchildren.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former IC
teacher Bernard Geneslé. Bernard died in December 2003, at the
age of 83, in his hometown of Valfrembert, France. He taught at IC
for 30 years, arriving in Beirut on October 1946 to teach French
language, history and literature. He later became Chairman of the
French Department and eventually Assistant Director of the
Secondary School.
Bernard’s talent and vitality were well
recognized and he was the recipient of
many notable awards, including the
French Légion d’Honneur, the Chevalier
des Palmes Académiques, Médailles du
Combattant de la Résistance, and the
Croix du Combattant. Bernard was a
great friend of IC throughout his long
and productive life and will be deeply
missed
.
