Comments from our New
Head of Sports at IC,
Dan Summers:
“What I Envision Happening
with the IC Athletic
Program”
Along with a stunning array of vegetation, mountains,
wonderful weather and the Mediterranean Sea, and the
warm welcome we have received from IC students and
staff, Beirut has proven to be a wonderful transition for
my family and me.
As the IC Sports Head and Coordinator of Physical
Education, I would like to see a greater athletic opportu-
nity for our Elementary, Middle and Secondary School
students. Many people who reminisce about their past
school years inevitably relate the positive experiences to
school trips and/or athletic/academic participation. This,
of course, has a great reflection on the school. As I see
it, the more we allow our students to prove their talents
in their entirety, the greater opportunity they have in
becoming rounded citizens, which incidentally should be
easy enough, since we have some of the finest athletic
and innovative students in Lebanon.
Another area that I would like to build upon is our ath-
letic diversity: it is very important that IC be known for
more than one or two sports. Along with some very tal-
ented badminton, basketball, cheer, swimming, track &
field, football and volleyball players, IC should also be
recognized for their tennis, cross-country, and table ten-
nis teams. This could lead to IC teams being repre-
sented not only in sports festivals, but also in forensics
math, poetry, drama and possibly literature competi-
tions. In all, it would further prove that IC continues to
develop the whole student.
Finally, I would like to see more people involved in our
athletic program. And with such a wonderfully rounded
group with so much to offer, this should prove to be the
easiest of my three goals. If anything, I’m certain we will
discover some hidden talents.

Mamduha
Beidas,
former
Elementary School Director,
was honored on the occasion of
her retirement at Martin House,
with the entire IC community
gathered in the garden to bid
her farewell. Mrs. Beidas was
awarded the Medal of Honor for
her contributions to Education
and Lebanon by Dr. George
Nehme, Director General of the
Ministry of Education represent-
ing Minister Samir Jisr.
Mrs. Beidas worked at IC for
25 years, instilling in her stu-
dents the important principles of
hard work, responsibility and
self-discipline to prepare them
for their later studies and life.
Thank you, Mrs. Beidas!
Sing to a Future High – Hurrah:
Graduation of 2003
July 7th was graduation day for the class of 2003. The 205 gradu-
ates, along with their parents, teachers, and the administration,
gathered in the Assembly Hall of the American University of Beirut
for commencement exercises. The commencement speaker was
George Walker, Director General of the International
Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). In his message, Mr. Walker
assured the 2003 graduates that IC has provided them with pro-
found background to be able to face the challenges of the future.
Dr. Charles wished all the graduates the best of luck in their future
endeavors and reminded them that IC is and will always be the
home for all its students and alumni. Mrs. Hanan Al Shawaf,
English instructor in the secondary school, gave a speech on
behalf of IC faculty, and graduates were addressed by their col-
league Yasmine Aboud.
Good luck graduates and wishing you a “future high - hurrah!”
