Preschoolers? But they’re just playing….
When we look around the Preschool, we see children play-
ing, drawing, painting, singing, and running. Just close your
eyes and imagine them in 20 or 25 years’ time. You will see
teachers, doctors, writers, businessmen and businesswomen,
philosophers, painters, entrepreneurs, and the political lead-
ers of tomorrow.
What would make these men
and women successful when
they enter the real world of
adulthood? What is it that they
should have in order to
become significant contribu-
tors to society and culture?
With these questions in mind,
it is becoming more and more
evident that bare academics,
regardless of the level of excel-
lence that a young mind can
absorb, are not enough to
develop the abilities needed to
excel in life.
We aim to develop constructive attitudes that encourage the
students’ acquisition of knowledge based on: appreciation
of what they see and experience, commitment to getting the
job done, confidence in their ability to perform, cooperation
with their peers, creativity in looking for solutions, curiosity
to know more and more, empathy with others, independ-
ence in judgment and thinking, integrity borne of an ethical
value system, and respect for those around them, all of
which will enable them to develop tolerance for that which
is different and non-conforming.
We strive to do all this by building up the children’s capabil-
ities as: inquirers, with the skills to research and learn;
thinkers, to analyze and solve problems; communicators, to
absorb and convey information properly; and risk-takers, to
make bold decisions based on reliable information. We
want our students to be knowledgeable, having a wealth of
information and experience; principled, with a value system
built on honesty, fairness, and justice; caring, to be genuine-
ly sensitive to the needs of others; open-minded, to respect
and appreciate other peoples and cultures; well-balanced,
to understand the importance of physical and mental equi-
librium; and reflective, to contemplate what they have expe-
rienced and learned and to make sense of it all.
This is the process taking place at the Preschool when your chil-
dren are painting, reading, running, playing, laughing, and crying.
IC Scholars Shine!
In 1999,
International
College
launched the IC
Scholars pro-
gram, which was
designed to
attract outstand-
ing students with
limited financial
resources to the
Secondary School at I.C., thus enriching our student body
and serving the greater community. The IC Scholars would be
selected from among the best performers in the Lebanese
Brevet exam, from every region of Lebanon. They would
have to be top students in their schools, and pass a rigorous
entrance exam at IC.
“We wanted to make sure we could give deserving students
a chance to come to IC by covering their full tuition,” said
Mishka Moujabber Mourani, the Senior Vice President. “The
selection process was rigorous, and we started with 6 stu-
dents the first year. Within three years we had 18 students
who came from the North, the South, the Chouf and Jbeil.”
“The IC Scholar program has been more rewarding than even
we anticipated,” says Mrs. Mourani. “Many of these young
men and women have proven to be outstanding members of
the student community in the Secondary School. They have
maintained a high academic standard of performance, and
have become involved actively in the life of the school.”
“In this year’s Lebanese Baccalaureate exam, IC Scholars have
taken top honors, including Nathalie Rawas, who ranked first
in Beirut and second in Lebanon. We are also very pleased
that most of our scholars have gone on to AUB, where they
have been awarded scholarships. This year we were particu-
larly proud to learn that, of the 10 Merit Scholarships that AUB
awards every year to outstanding students from Lebanon and
beyond, three went to IC students. Two of those, Alia Atweh
and Wassim Skaff, were IC Scholars.”
This year’s official exam results have been excellent. All stu-
dents passed the Brevet exams, and 60% of our students from
both Ain Aar and Ras Beirut obtained honors. In the French
Baccalaureate exams all our students passed and 63%
obtained honors. The highest performer in the French Bacc
Literary Option, Mira Saidi, is an IC student. As for the
Lebanese Baccalaureate, IC ranked in the top 10 in Lebanon
in both Humanities and General Sciences, and in the top 10
for Beirut in all options of the Baccalaureate.
