IC and the US Embassy
At the beginning of the academic year, US Ambassador to
Lebanon Mr. Jeffrey Feltman presented Dr. Arthur Charles
with a financial grant from MEPI (Middle East Partnership
Initiative), in the form of a check for $25,000, meant to
underwrite the costs of a training program for teachers of lit-
eracy in Lebanon.
The grant proposal was written by Lama Khayr, Director of
Ain Aar Preschool and Lower Elementary, and Dr. Raouf
Ghusayni, Director of the Educational Resources Center.
Under the proposal, IC teachers will offer 8 days of work-
shops during this academic year to approximately 25 teach-
ers from Lebanese public schools. The public school teach-
ers will be selected through IC’s professional development
outreach program.
IC teachers will
also visit the public
school teachers in
their schools to
provide feedback
on their literacy
programs.
The connections
between IC and the
US Embassy do not
end here; on
October 14, 2004,
a dinner was held
in Martin House Gardens in honor of the US Ambassador.
Present were Board Members, as well as members of the IC
Administration, the Parents Committee, and the IC Alumni
Association. Ambassador Feltman and the invitees discussed
the importance of education and the role played by US
monetary grants in furthering its development. Mr. Feltman
praised the work of IC in designing initiatives to improve
education in Lebanon.
F
ounder’s Day
Founder’s Day was cele-
brated in different ways
throughout the IC schools.
At the Preschool in Ras
Beirut, students took
home a summary of the
IC heritage, in an effort to
introduce parents to IC’s
rich history. Alumni par-
ents also played a major
role in the Preschool cele-
brations this year, providing photographs of their days at
IC to students required to bring such material to school,
and paying a visit to KG II classes, where they shared
their experiences as IC students through photos, old
Torches, and graduation diplomas. At the Elementary
School, students gathered to sing a catchy song written
by Randa Sabbah:
“We are students of IC
The happiest children that can be
Caring, inquiring we will be
Reflective thinkers, oh so free!”
As for Secondary School students, they assembled in the
amphitheater, where they were addressed by the
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, William H. Turner.
