2004 Graduates Celebrations: Miss
Torch, Mr. Graduate, Prom Night,
and Commencement
For the second year in a
row, the Miss Torch pag-
eant and Prom Night were
celebrated together; more
then three hundred attend-
ed the event at Le Royal-
Dbayeh: parents, teachers,
administrators, and, of
course, students, were all
present on June 28.
The night started with the
Miss Torch and Mr.
Graduate pageant. The
title for Miss Torch was
awarded to Dina Yammout
(Economics/Sociology),
and the title of Mr.
Graduate went to Dany Cherfan (IB II). The evening ended
(for parents and teachers only) with the Prom festivities, and
the naming of
Prom Queen
Miss Lynn Issa
El Khoury
(TSM) and
Prom King Mr.
Walid Ismail
(TSV).
On June 30, IC
bid its final
farewell to the
class of 2004 in
its 113th
Commencement Exercise. 210 students received their diplo-
mas from Dr. Arthur Charles in the presence of US
Ambassador Vincent Battle. The Commencement Speech was
given by
Dr. Nasser Saidi ’69
, who entitled it “A Brave New
World for the e-Lebanon Generation,” comparing the social
situation of 1969 with the current situation, and encouraging
graduates to “seek to reform our institutions and change the
‘rules of the game’ to produce a better outcome.” Other
speeches were given by Mrs. Amal Charara, who delivered
the faculty address, and Christian Chamoun, this year’s
Valedictorian.
ACS/IC Invitational Volleyball
Tournament: IC Cougars Take 2nd
The International College Volleyball Teams are well on their
way to becoming a strong force on the local volleyball
scene. To prove this, on the November 5-6 weekend both
the Varsity Girls and Boys finished 2nd in the ACS/IC
Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The girls lost to the
Amman Baccalaureate School of Jordan in two sets while
the boys lost to ACS of Beirut in a close three set competi-
tion. Added to this, our developing girls’ team placed 3rd at
the JV level. In the end, both the coaches and the athletes
were exceptionally happy with the performances. As for
the future, the Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys are excited and
working hard to ensure that their participation in the Bilkent
International School of Turkey Volleyball Invitational, to be
held Dec 2-5, will reap even better results.
A number of IC students,
faculty, and staff took part
in one of the most impor-
tant events in Lebanon this
year: the Beirut
International Marathon
(BIM). On Sunday,
October 10, Dr. Arthur
Charles, President of IC,
Mr. Hamdi Houalla, Head
of the Arabic Department, Mrs. Myriam Saadeh, Math Instructor in
the Secondary School, Miss Randa Tabbara, Support Instructor in
the Preschool, and Mr. Riad Chirazi, Activities Coordinator, along
with 17 IB students and many students from other levels, ran 10
km without dawdling; as for Mrs. Randa Sabbah, Head of the
Music Department, and Mr. Joel Tallman, English Instructor in the
Secondary School, they ran the whole 42km!!!
IB students were enticed by the humanitarian dimensions of the
BIM, which is not just a world-class marathon, but aims at making
a difference in the lives of the underprivileged. To that end, they
raised 2,700,000 L.L. for the Brave Heart Institution, a non-gov-
ernmental organization that takes care of children with heart
problems, and presented the money to Mrs. Riham Serhan - Brave
Heart Director. Oum El Nour, an NGO working on rehabilitation
and drug prevention, was also in the minds of IC students, many
of whom helped raise awareness of its activities. Throughout the
day, IB students could be seen wearing distinctive Brave Heart T-
shirts and IC caps, while staff and many students from other levels
sported T-shirts with the IC and Oum El Nour logos emblazoned
on them.
