Mr. Tom Weaver:
In the Words of His Colleague Mr. Allen Miller
Tom Weaver, International College legend, celebrated
his 90th birthday recently in Columbus, Ohio, with
friends from Lebanon, Syria, and the United States.
Tom has become a dear friend of mine since we
reconnected about ten years ago in Delaware, Ohio,
where he lives. I was at IC for most of the 1960's and
met Tom when he
joined the IC faculty
after teaching for about
twenty years. When I
left IC in the early 70's,
Tom succeeded me as
Chairman of the English
Department.
The party was a cele-
bration of a man who
has given half his life
to teaching young peo-
ple in the Middle East.
A few former students,
now in their fifties, six-
ties, and seventies, were able to be present to fete a
man who is devoted to the Arab world, and has made
a difference in the lives of countless people there.
There were many toasts to this remarkable friend. Suzy
Asseily, Tom's dear friend from Beit Meri, brought mes-
sages she had gathered from friends in Syria and
Lebanon, and an award from Lebanon's Equestrian
Association that Tom contributed so much to.
Phone calls and letters arrived
from former students who
haven't seen or talked with
Tom for years. Somehow
everyone seemed to know that
"Mr. Weaver is having his
ninetieth birthday, and a phone
call or a letter is essential."
Tom continues to explore his
beloved Arab world through
books and magazines and
conversations in English,
French, Arabic, and a smatter-
ing of Armenian.
The evening was a memorable celebration of a memo-
rable man. It was a treat to be present.
