Rewarding Years of Dedication,
an Evening of Appreciation …
March 9 is
National Teacher’s
Day, a time for
honoring teachers
and recognizing
the lasting contri-
bution they make to our lives. Here at IC we also pay trib-
ute to IC staff with twenty-five years of service, like Mrs.
Kifah Badreddine and Miss Nadia Osseiran, and retirees
Mrs. Aida Khazen, Mrs. Nora Khatchadurian, and Mr. Elie
Abu Rjeili, veterans all. Taking place on March 12, this
year’s dinner also inaugurated the first annual presentation
of the “Albert Abela Distinguished Teacher Award.” The
award recognizes outstanding professional performance,
and is bestowed upon deserving instructors in all teaching
areas and at all levels. Recipients are current teachers nomi-
nated by fellow teachers and students, and with characteris-
tics such as: commitment to the values embodied in the IC
mission statement, continued professional growth, as well
as a history of significant contributions in student advising,
student activities, curriculum writing and College
Outreach…to name but a few. Congratulations to Lina
Moushantaf, Ras Beirut (RB) Preschool; Nayla Serhal, Ain
Aar (AA) Preschool; Suha Choueiri, RB Elementary School;
Rita Nakhle, AA Elementary School; Rima Khishen, RB
Middle School; Claude Khalil, AA Middle School; and
Mahmud Shihab, Secondary School.
Carnival 2004
This year, the IC Carnival was
held at the Ain Aar campus.
The turnout was—as expect-
ed—very high, with more than
2000 people showing up to
enjoy the festivities.
Carnival is an important tradi-
tion in IC culture, and for more than 50 years this annual
event has been close to the heart of every student. It also
serves a worthy cause: the money raised through entrance
fees, games, and food and beverage sales goes to the IC
financial aid budget.
We offer a big thank you to our teachers, parents, and
administrators, without whose time and dedication this
event would not have been possible!
Faculty Exchange Program
Nine IC teachers took part in this year’s faculty exchange
program. They had the opportunity to visit different interna-
tional schools in the Middle East, Europe, and the United
States. All had the chance to learn and share teaching meth-
ods with teachers of a wide variety of subjects in a number
of schools. They reported that the experience was profes-
sionally rewarding and highly recommend the continuation
of the program. IC teachers who participated in the program
include: Zeina Abou Khalil, Bonn International School,
Germany; Hanan Al-Shawaf, Amman Baccalaureate School,
Jordan; Rana Anouti, International School of Geneva,
Switzerland; Nada Bekdache, Zurich International School,
Switzerland; Huda Diab, Deerfield Academy,
Massachusetts; Connie Hadba, Ridgefield Public Schools,
Connecticut; Nawal Haddad, Watkinson School,
Connecticut; Mary Sacre, International School of
Wiesbaden, Germany; and Myriam Smayra, American
British Academy in Muscat, Oman.
In turn, IC hosted six teachers: two from Watkinson School,
one from Deerfield Academy, two from Bonn International
School, and one from the International School of Geneva.
These teachers reported that their visit to IC provided posi-
tive impressions and will linger as rich memories. The visit-
ing teachers appreciated the opportunity to learn about
Lebanese culture as well as exchange ideas with members
of the IC community.
The IC faculty exchange program offers unique opportuni-
ties for professional development, and we hope it will con-
tinue to grow over the coming years.
