Alumnus Honors
Teacher
IC alumnus Khalil Ilyas ’59 hosted a dinner in honor of
his former P.E teacher Shawki Dammous at the Crown
Plaza hotel on Thursday, April 22. The dinner gathered IC
alumni from Saudi Arabia, the other Gulf states, and
Lebanon, in addition to Dr. Arthur Charles and Mr.
Moufid Beydoun ’64. The evening was not without its
surprises for Mr. Dammous; he was offered a trophy as a
symbol of his many years of dedication to IC students
and athletes, including the host himself, Mr. Ilyas.
This year’s Gala Dinner gath-
ered more then 500 IC alumni
and friends at the Royal
Pavilion BIEL in Beirut. The din-
ner offered delicious food,
excellent music, and, through a
raffle, the opportunity to win a
car. Hosted by the Office of
Alumni and Development and
the IC Alumni Association, the
evening was not without its
surprises; aside from the capti-
vating and recognizable voice
of Tania, our guests were privy
to a number of unexpected
musical performances! Five of
our guests were called to the
stage to sing: Mrs. Anabelle
Abdallah, Dr. Marwan
Gharzeddine ’82, Mrs. Rabab
Hage, Dr. Wassim Wazzan
’69, and Dr. George Zeitoun
’69. they performed a number
of songs, including Sinatra
crowd favorites “My Way”
and “Strangers in the Night.”
Along with the cheering and
applauding of their brand new
admirers, all five gathered on
stage for the finale, consisting of
Mary Hopkins’ wistful “Those
were the Days, My Friend.” The
evening got down to a whole lot
of dancing and socializing, end-
ing with the raffle draw, which
resulted in the lucky Mrs. Suha
Hakim winning the Mazda MX-5
convertible.
