Gebran Tueni ’76
was a devoted
advocate of Lebanon's sovereignty
and independence, which he
worked tirelessly to achieve. He
spoke out loud what people were
afraid to say. His terms were mod-
erate and he was perhaps the
most eloquent activist of his coun-
try's sovereignty and freedom. He
played an instrumental role in
Lebanese political developments
in the coming years; he strived hard
to achieve freedom of his people, a freedom that has
yet to be bestowed!
Publisher, Chairman of the Board, General Manager
and Editorialist of An-Nahar since 2000, Mr. Tueni con-
tinued the tradition of excellence that he inherited from
his father,
Mr. Ghassan Tueni ’43
. With the stroke of his
pen he inspired journalists and other sectors of his
country to freedom of expression. “Tueni was targeted
because he was the voice of freedom, him and others
like him”, stated
MP Walid Jumblatt ’69
.
On March 14, 2005 from Martyr’s Square he delivered
an awe-inspiring pledge, which revealed his tolerance
and his patriotic sentiment towards his country:
In the name of God
We, Muslims and Christians,
Pledge that united we shall remain
To the end of time
To better defend our Lebanon- The Oath of
Independence (as many would like to call it)
